There’s a quick embrace while everyone watches from the window of a cab or from the sidewalk curb. The featured two slip from each other, holding on until the final fingertip, hoping for more but knowing it’s better this way. Emptiness fills the widening space between their two bodies and for a moment their arms hang suspended, still reaching, still wondering. But the honk of the cab and the holler of a drunk brings them back and they part, longing filling their hearts for a few moments before each returns to the life that waited patiently on the sidelines for their return.
It was the night’s end, possibility their only friend.
